Restaurants

Whilst at a glance, Chamonix seems to have a number of good quality, reasonably priced places to eat. The truth is, that much the same as a lot of touristy places around France, Chamonix’s good quality restaurants are hard to find. However if you know where to look you will not be disappointed. We have sifted through the restaurants on offer here and from our own experience we can recommend the ones that, we think are the places to go here in Chamonix.

Albert 1er, Route du Bouchet: Tel 04 50 53 05 09: Situated in the grounds of the Albert 1er Hotel, just a 2 min walk from the town square is Chamonix’s very own Michelin stared restaurant, which speaks for itself. Amazing food and some good value menus that will not require a re-mortgage. Relaxed atmosphere and none of the pomposity of many of the restaurants of this calibre.

Alan Peru, Av de l’Aiguille du Midi, Tel 04 50 53 16 04: Chamonix’s international fusion food hub. Mixing Savoyard with a touch of Eastern mysticism, Alan Peru has hit the spot with this one. The place to head if the fondue, raclete, steak frites thing is getting a little too much. We have been on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed.

Bergerie, Av Michel Croz,Tel 04 50 53 45 04: If you want to experience a proper Savoyard eating experience this is the place to go. Friendly, warm atmosphere with simple and generous portions. It can get very hot around the fireplace though so dress appropriately. Recommend booking in peak times.

La Cabane, Les Praz, Route du Golf, Tel 04 50 53 23 27: Amazing log cabin style restaurant out by the golf course. Warm and homely in winter, cool and relaxing in summer, La Cabane is a great place to unwind after 18 holes or an amazing place for that special dinner occasion. Recommend booking.

La Caleche, Rue Paccard, Tel 04 50 55 94 68: Smack bang in the centre of the high st, La Caleche is unashamedly touristy, but it pulls it off in spectacular fashion. Great local cuisine, theme dressed staff and live Savoyard music every Thursday night. Very popular so book if you want to avoid disappointment.

Casa Valerio, Rue Du Lyret, Tel 04 50 55 93 40: Chamonix’s own Italian, this close to the boarder you would expect nothing less than some of the best Italian around, and ‘Casa’ as it’s known to the locals does not disappoint. Great pizzas and wine, friendly unobtrusive staff and those little bread sticks! Yes! Highly Recommended. Mention Mountain Lifestyle when booking and we may be able to offer discounts in the future!

Le Chaudron, Rue des Moulins, Tel 04 50 53 40 34: Cozy little restaurant on one of the most popular streets in town. Tasty food and a perfect place for a candle lit dinner.

La Dolce Vita. Rue Du Lyret, Tel 04 50 53 91 29: Right next door to ‘Casa’ and run by the same couple, this cute little wine bar and restaurant is a great place to go for a meal if you are not ‘starving’. Amazing antipasti’s, pastas and of course an amazing wine list. Great atmosphere.

L’Eden, Route des Gaudenays,  Tel 04 50 53 18 43: Warm and welcoming atmosphere with modern local cuisine at its best. Situated just out of Chamonix in the village of Les Praz, dinner at l’Eden is an evening you’ll not forget in a hurry. Recommended.

Le Gecko, Rue Joseph Vallot, Tel 04 50 53 35 57: Ok, so we haven’t been to this one, though not through lack of trying. Each time we have been it has been packed with locals, which in our books, makes it worth a mention. They all can’t be wrong, surely....

Le Lapin Agile, Rue Whymper, Tel 04 50 53 33 25: Cafe and Restaurant just off the main square. Wines from all over the world and real Italian coffee. They serve free nibbles with drinks every evening and light, simple, inexpensive meals. The agile Rabbit is a Mountain Lifestyle favourite. Mention Mountain Lifestyle for a free smile!

MBC, Route de Bouchet, Tel 04 50 53 61 59: Great burgers and Beer! Chamonix’s very own micro brewery. Lively atmosphere, friendly staff and like i said, Great Burgers! Half price chicken wings on Monday nights are a must!

Poco Loco, rue Paccard, Tel 04 50 53 43 03:  Located in the heart of the Chamonix pedestrian zone, Poco Loco is a great place for a burger and a beer in town. Tasty, reasonably priced burgers, good value beers and a friendly cool atmosphere, if not a little cosy. Great place for a mid evening burger. Eat in or Takeaway

Satsuki, Rue Joseph Vallot, Tel 04 50 53 21 99: Chamonix’s own Japanese restaurant. Great little private room downstairs for up to 14 people.

Le Vert Hotel, Route des Gaillands, Tel 04 50 53 13 58: A brisk 10 minute walk out of town, Le Vert has a restaurant with international cuisine. It has a very lively bar next door with free pool and large screens for the sport. They also run a free shuttle during winter.

There, so they are best ones we reckon. Let us know if you have any more recommendations, or you think that we have got it wrong.
